Dr. Michael D. Acosta

Writer/ Musician/ Professor

About Me

The Renaissance has had an exceptional effect on me. Artist, architects, writers, musicians, and mathematicians freely crossing cerebral hemispheres and practicing multiple crafts often simultaneously. I began as a jazz musician learning how to navigate musical harmonic structures, while being encouraged to break these constructs in exploration of something new. It is this lesson I have taken with me into writing and into the classroom. Whether I am writing for film, television, or fiction staying focused on story and the characters telling it without being trapped by false obstacles allows for exciting and creative content not formulaic literary re-treads. The freedom to explore and create with no boundaries is true freedom.

In music listening to other great musicians provides you with a musical vocabulary necessary to communicate your own ideas. In writing it is experience that provides the color to create three dimensional worlds. Traveling and immersing yourself in local culture gives the writer a vast palette to bring to bear while creating impactful stories. It has been my great honor to have traveled to over 70 different countries on this planet. The perspective is uniquely useful when teaching a broad array of cultures within the classroom.
